Hikers on the rocky ridge of Mont Ventoux, with the summit ahead.

Mont Ventoux

120 km from the house · Vaucluse

We see it from our mountains… and we've climbed it on foot.

OK, it's not in the Ardèche, but you can see it from almost all our mountains, especially from Courry, right next to Le Mas g'Ardéchois! Telling you "look, that's Mont Ventoux" doesn't help much when it's just a little white bump blending into the clouds. So I'll show it to you, because I climbed it on foot with a group of friends and my family. (A long, hard hike, but you can also drive to the top.)

Mont Ventoux is the highest mountain of the Rhône valley, and its pride. It dominates the region and can be seen from everywhere. In winter it's even snow-capped, a sign to the locals that it was very cold last night: "Oh, did you see? It's snowed on the Ventoux, it's not warm, eh?"

Here it is, seen from here and from over there.

At the summit of Mont Ventoux.

"Swept by violent winds, Mont Ventoux is the highest peak in the Vaucluse. Topped by a white ridge that gives the illusion of eternal snow, it rises to 1,912 m. On a clear day, its summit offers a 360° view from the Alps to the Mediterranean, from the Écrins to the Cévennes, from the Sainte-Victoire mountain to the Alpilles, and back to the Rhône valley."
